While Suetsugu handled the design of X’s Gaea Armor, his Falcon Armor was designed by long-time Capcom illustrator Ryuji Higurashi. That’s why the game itself has a real feel of finality to it.” By this point, character design duties were handled almost entirely by Haruki Suetsugu who added new details to designs to set all the characters apart from one another. I just told the team to ‘finish off the series with this title,’ and left it at that. In the MegaMan X Official Complete Works artbook, Inafune recounted, “I had very little to do with X5. Keiji Inafune himself stated that the game was originally planned to be the final game in the X series. Of course, part of that may have been by design. After all, my response to the game was a pretty big part of the reason I avoided the remainder of the series for so long – I didn’t even acknowledge the poor reputation of later MMX games until years after they’d been released. All the same, for many years, I classified it as “the worst X game”: an unfair designation for certain, but not inaccurate from my perspective. Although, as I recall, my X playthrough had similar caveats to my run with him back in X4. It was the last mainline game in the X series I played under my own power and I managed to clear it with both characters way back when the game came out around 2001.
We’re going to start by easing into this decline but be forewarned: the worst is yet to come. Of course, I’d only say that I absolutely needed to stream two of these games to actually beat them without quitting, but streaming tends to be a pretty big motivator for me in general – I’d already livestreamed the first two games I never played through, might as well do the rest too, right?Įither way, let’s get started. The two games I present sans video accompaniment are the only ones in this batch that I managed to play through on my own when they first came out, where I didn’t need the incentive of livestreaming to complete them. Notice how only two of them don’t link playlists from my personal YouTube channel – links which are replete with frustration, anger and plenty of language that’s, shall we say, not safe for work. Just to illustrate why that is, take a quick skim below of the remaining games headers. I’ve long said that MegaMan X was my least favorite sub-series of the entire franchise and these games are a big part of the reason why. I’ve covered the best, now it’s time to cover the rest.
